A pleasant smile comes with excellent oral hygiene. When you fail to brush and floss, dental and medical problems rise up like weeds in the rainy season. From gum disease to bone loss, from heart conditions to infection anything can happen when teeth are not taken care of. · What’s the proper way to brush teeth?
To clean your teeth, begin by keeping the brush at a 45-degree angle. It should in line with the gums and the surface of the tooth so that both touch the bristles. Use an up and down motion and then a back and forth one to clean the outer parts of the teeth. Always be gentle, else your gums will start to bleed. Once the outside is done, move on to the inside part of the teeth. Again, utilise the same movements and at the same angle.

The last step in the process is cleaning the tongue and the roof of the mouth. Remember bacteria build up on both which lead to bad breath.

· How many times do we need to brush?
The recommended number is twice. When food breaks down due to bacteria, it creates acid buildup in the mouth. Brushing twice a day ensure that this is removed. If for some reason, you are not able to clean two times, then at least rinse your mouth with water after every meal. Do it thoroughly so that there is a bare minimum substrate left for bacteria to work on.

· Should we floss regularly?
When you are heading to bed or rushing to be on time for work, flossing can be tedious and a chore we all tend to ignore. But it is important. Flossing helps get rid of all those tiny food particles that brushing couldn’t. These harmful substances get stuck deep within your teeth and are near impossible to remove with a brush or mouthwash. Flossing once every day can eliminate them all.

· Is using a mouthwash necessary?
Mouthwashes are not mandatory especially because most of them are not useful. The only mouthwash that does affect oral hygiene is one that has chlorine dioxide or Listerine. It kills harmful bacteria in the mouth and therefore protects the teeth. Mouthwash alone will not help but when used in tandem with brushing and flossing it can be extremely advantageous. Think of it as the cherry on top of a creamy, spongy cake.

Regular check-ups with a dentist and cleanings can avert most oral problems from occurring. So, while following a good oral regime is essential, visits to dentists are too. Furthermore, it is best to stay away from excess consumption of soda, coffee, and alcohol. All of them have tones of sugar and additives which promote tooth decay and gum disease. While you are at it, try eating foods that are full of calcium.
